The Hawks in Limpopo had to go after their colleagues in the law enforcement on Monday and arrested 5 police officers stationed at Groblersdal for alleged fraud and theft.

This came after a complainant, who owns a filling station in Groblersdal noticed in February 2020 that cashiers, petrol attendants and the officers worked together in using petrol cards for their own good. This included refuelling their private vehicles.

The Provincial Hawks spokesperson Captain Matimba Maluleke said it is alleged that the suspects would wait for motorists who would pay cash and swipe the fleet card in return for money and share it amongst themselves.

However, the filling station owner opened the case at Groblersdal and later transferred to the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation for further probe.

From the suspects’ alleged deeds, “The state has suffered a loss of over R100 000-00 due to these illegal activities.” Said Maluleke.

Two sergeants and three constables are expected to make their first appearance in the Groblersdal Magistrate’s court soon.

The outstanding suspects in this matter are still investigated.
