As the rain continues pouring in, the Mopani District Municipality in Limpopo is urging residents to be vigilant.
The municipality said as much as the rain have brought much relief to the district as water levels in most dams have increased significantly over the past few days, it has also caused disruptions in some parts of the district.
The Department of Water and Sanitation revealed that the water levels at the Tzaneen dam increased from 21,71% in the past weeks to 44.77% this week.
Thabina dam, Tours dam, Dap Naude dam, and Mogoebaskloof dam are all above 100% capacity.
Municipality spokesperson Odas Ngobeni said “We welcome the rain, but also saddened by the loss of life. The joint operational committee has organised psychological support for the Maila family in Sedawa village whose daughter drowned on Sunday.”
Several households were affected by the rain, particularly in the Greater Giyani Municipality last week.
Executive Mayor Pule Shayi said people must avoid crossing flooded roads, bridges and streams, and also to monitor the whereabouts of children at all times.
