Teams of social workers from the Department of Social Development have been dispatched to Ga-Rapitsi village in Moletjie in the Capricorn District and Lorraine village in Mopani District to provide psychosocial support to the two families of the victims of floods. The two victims, a woman and a man, were swept away by floodwater while trying to cross low water bridges in the respective areas.

MEC for Social Development Nkakareng Rakgoale said social workers will remain with the families of the victims of the floods during this time.

In the Vhembe and Mopani Districts, heavy rains and subsequent floods caused a trail of destruction affecting about 100 families. In the Mopani District the police’s search and rescue teams and community members are continuing with the search operation for a woman who was swept away on Thursday.

MEC Rakgoale added that teams of psychosocial support remain on high alert to ensure that they immediately conduct assessments and provide relief in the form of food parcels and other basic amenities.
