Man found in possession of Copper worth R4.8 Million

A 39-year-old man is expected to appear at Vereeniging Magistrates Court on Monday 25 January 2021. This is after he was found in possession of suspected robbed copper plates to the estimated value of 4.8 million rands in Vanderbeilpark and De Deur respectively.

Captain Kay Makhubele said in the early hours of Friday 22 January 2021, the Sedibeng Tactical Response Team and other units followed the intelligence driven information about the truck full of copper that was robbed in Cleveland, heading to Sedibeng.

“Information led the team to Vanderbijlpark where copper to the estimated value of 3 million rands was recovered. Further information was received that more copper was hidden in De Deur.”

Makhubela said police proceeded to a plot in De Deur where more copper plates to the estimated value of 1.8 million rands was recovered.

The investigation is underway as police continue to search for other suspects who may be working with arrested suspect in the commission of crimes.

Police in Gauteng are concerned about the growing tendency of criminals targeting the Critical Infrastructure such as Rail and Telephone networks.
