The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) has settled the strike at Macsteel. Members went on a strike at all Macsteel plants on Monday to demand the immediate reinstatement of 99 employees who were retrenched in December

“We are pleased to say that Macsteel has agreed that all employees who were retrenched must report to their offices on Monday the 25th of January in order to discuss their placement in vacant positions available.” Explained NUMSA General Secretary Irvin Jim.

Jim added that the settlement ensures that all retrenched workers will retain all monies paid to them including the severance pay, paid to them when they were retrenched during December 2020, even if they are re-hired into a new post.

“We want to thank our members for their courage and for their discipline during the strike because their actions resulted in this settlement. The strike is officially over and our members have even returned to work.” Concluded Jim.
