Three grade 12 learners from Rethusegile Secondary school in Lethabong Village near Rustenburg died in a taxi accident. This is after they attended an “after examinations celebration” on Friday, 11 December 2020 .
It is alleged that 14 learners were passengers in a taxi that was transporting them from a resort near Brits, back to Lethabong. It is alleged that the taxi overturned along the R511 road. Three learners were certified dead on the scene whilst eleven learners and a driver sustained serious injuries.
Seven learners were discharged, while four learners are still at the hospital receiving medical attention.
The North West Department of Education MEC Mmaphefo Matsemela visited the bereaved families. “These learners spent 13 years in our schools and we never anticipated to part ways with them in this manner. Currently we have established a team which will investigate the trip”.
Matsemela indicated that the department established a team that will assist families to organize funeral preparations.
