The Department of Basic Education has joined hands with Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator to close the gap of unemployment on the youth in the country.
This partnership is in line with President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme. Of the 300 000 job opportunities, 200 000 is expected to be created by the Basic Education Sector and 100 000 by the General School Assistants.
Each provincial education department has already started issuing advertisements for the youth to apply. The Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI) is aimed at “addressing Covid-19 academic disruptions as well as addressing some of the lingering systemic challenges.”
Harambee will, in this case, help in digitizing the recruitment process across 9 provinces. These opportunities are targeted at the youth aged between 18 and 35. The Department said the recruitment will take place at the community level, with schools required to prioritize candidates living near the school.
