In commemoration of the late ANC President Oliver Reginal Tambo’s 103rd birthday, President Cyril Ramaphosa on Tuesday unveiled a 9-metre statue of stalwart Tambo at O.R. Tambo International Airport.
Ramaphosa said Tambo was good with architect work.”It is most fitting that this statue that we have erected here at the airport is named after him is going to be a gateway to the continent and to the world.”
He further said like the statue of President Nelson Mandela at the Union Buildings in Tshwane, “I have no doubt that this one too will become a major tourist attraction. I am pleased that you have also put it here almost at the centre of the airport buildings to be indeed a magnet.”
The statue was funded by the government and came with a price tag of R13 million . It bears ANC logo on a left side.
Gauteng acting premier Panyaza Lesufi said there is no amount of the money they could put on the statue of Tambo.
