Collapsed roof kills 8-year-old girl

Some people believe that rain is a sign of blessings, the community of Sefofotse Village under Greater Letaba Local Municipality in Limpopo can’t say the same. An 8-year-old girl was allegedly killed when a roof fell on her after a heavy rain on Saturday.

The provincial MEC for CoGHSTA Baiskopo Makamu, Mopani District Municipality Mayor Pule Shai, Mayor of Greater Letaba Local Municipality Peter Matlou paid the deceased family a visit. Shai also wished a speedy recovery to the injured child who is currently in hospital.

The heavy rain left 80 households in destitute. Disaster management is providing temporary shelter, food parcels and blankets to the affected family.

Mayor Shai urged residents to be vigilant as torrential rain continues to cause flooding in some parts of the district.

Preliminary reports indicate that villages under Greater Letaba Local Municipality Sedibeng, Sefofotse, Maupa, Bellevue, Mohlabaneng, Jamela, Tlatja and Bellevue are all affected by the heavy rain.

The Mopani District Municipality’s disaster management team working with stakeholders such as the local Municipality and Department of Social Development are still collecting data which will guide on the approach to assist the affected families.
