Former KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Mmamonyane Ngobeni (52), and Captain Aswin Narainpershad (52) were released on bail of R20 000 and R10 000, respectively on Monday. They briefly appeared at the Durban Magistrate’s court.
The two appeared in connection with allegations of fraud and corruption related to the inflation of accommodation prices for KwaZulu-Natal South African Police Services during the Fifa World Cup tournament hosted in South Africa in 2010.
There are further allegations regarding subsequent attempts to bribe a police officer.
NPA National Spokesperson Sipho Ngwenya said according to bail conditions, the two may not leave the Kwazulu Natal province and they must handover their passports to the Investigating Directorate.
They will appear in court on 11 November 2020.
