President Cyril Ramaphosa on Friday, 02 October 2020 will address a virtual high-level meeting of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to commemorate and promote International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.

The annual event at UN General Assembly will provide an opportunity for member of states to raise awareness of the threat posed to humanity by nuclear weapons and the necessity for their total elimination in order to mobilise international efforts towards achieving the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world.

The initiative was pioneered by the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the occasion is used to promote the NAM’s core positions on nuclear disarmament.

South Africa voluntarily ended its nuclear weapons programme in 1989.
