A man who allegedly defrauded SASSA of R1.2 M appears in court

A 51-year- old man is expected to appear at the Zwelitsha Regional Court, at Eastern Cape on Monday for allegedly defrauding the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) almost R1.2 million. He was arrested at King Williams Town on Friday.

The suspect allegedly recruited community members in the same area, Bisho and Zwelitsha to supply him with identity numbers whom he provided to SASSA officials and

They then fraudulently created disability grants on their behalf between August 2018 and September 2019.

Hawks spokesperson Lwando Zenzile said the Hawk’s Serious Corruption Crime Investigation Unit and Crime Intelligence teamed up after they were alerted of the fraudulent and corrupt activities of the suspect and the SASSA officials.

“The investigating team established that after the money get loaded into individual accounts, the suspect made withdrawals and give the so-called beneficiaries half of the money and the rest is shared amongst him and the officials.” Said Zenzile.

 He said more arrests are expected soon.
