In between chasing the criminals and making sure that laws are followed in Johannesburg CBD in Gauteng, a Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officer Rose Sithole was faced with an unique situation out of her job description.
She successfully helped the mother to deliver her baby in the middle of the night at Henry Nxumalo street on Thursday at about 23h40.
In a statement released on Saturday, JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said Sithole was alerted by an Intergrated Intelligent Operations Command Centre (IIOC) Camera Operator of a woman who looked like she was going into labour on Henry Nxumalo Street in the Johannesburg CBD, near Johannesburg Central SAPS.
“When officer Sithole arrived at the scene she noticed that the a 30-year-old woman who was with her male partner was pregnant and was indeed going into labour right there on the sidewalk. She asked a colleague to go borrow a blanket from Johannesburg Central SAPS and before he could return, officer Sithole had delivered a healthy baby boy on the Joburg Streets.” Said Nxumalo
Sithole had to roll up her sleeves to help deliver the baby and once she did it, “City of Joburg EMS soon arrived and both mother and baby where taken to Coronation Clinic to be assessed.”
It is said that both the mother and child were discharged and they are doing well.
