Presenters at Mahikeng Fm downed tools on Wednesday because they didn’t get their August Salaries. A community radio station comprising of 42 employees is facing maladministration and workers can’t take it anymore. A registered member of Mahikeng FM Society, Karabo Kgokong admitted that there are serious governance issues at the station. “Board members don’t want to call an AGM to address these issues.”
It is alleged that Treasurer, Adam Mahommed halted the payments at Standard bank in Mahikeng. Just News was reliably informed that Mahommed, wrote a letter to the bank, informing them not to proceed with the payments.
This is not the first time that presenters at this community station strike because of late payments. In 2014, presenters faced the same problem.
Late payments or lack thereof, are not the only issues giving some workers a headache. Personal favours and association with certain people remain a concern.
Just News learnt that some workers are not happy with the fact that board members want to appoint a certain individual as Acting Station manager. JustNews contacted Mahommed to clarify financial issues as well as the criteria they use to select a suitable candidate. He promised to get back to us, but he didn’t.
Presenters were paid with brown envelopes late on Wednesday. Will the financial issues at Mahikeng FM ever be resolved to avoid an even greater damage? Only time will tell.
