A 38-year-old Home Affairs employee , Muntu Edwell Monareng was granted a R3000 bail by the eMalahleni Magistrate Court on Thursday. He was arrested on Wednesday for alleged corruption.

In a released statement by Mpumalanga Hawks on Friday, it said some irregularities in the issuing of birth certificates to foreign nationals were detected during an internal inspection in January 2020. They then conducted an internal investigation.

Monareng allegedly approached a Home Affairs investigator and bribed him with R13 000 in order to stop the investigation against him. The investigator reported the matter to his superior.

The Hawks together with the Department of Home Affairs, Kwa-Zulu Natal Crime Intelligence, Middelburg Counter Narcotics and Crime Intelligence Technical Support Unit, arrested Monareng on Wednesday.

The operation team seized identity documents and money. Monareng is expected back at eMalahleni Magistrate court in Mpumalanga on 09 October 2020.
