As South Africans look forward to commemorating Women’s day on Sunday the 9th of August, not everyone will be in a celebratory mood.
Women Affected by Mining United in Action (WAMUA) say they will commemorate Women’s Day by holding protests in the mining towns where they live across the country, to highlight the injustices they continue to face at the hands of multinational mining companies and government.
WAMUA said in its untransformed state, the mining sector continues to be the site of oppression and exploitation against the women working in and living near the mines.
